Frequently Asked Questions: System 190 with RAUSHIELD

Considering System 190 with RAUSHIELDTM hurricane protection system for your home? Here is a collection of answers to some of the most common questions.

What is System 190 with RAUSHIELD?

REHAU System 190 is a side-load single-hung and single-slider window system. A new frame with an integral anchoring system allows the RAUSHIELD storm protection fabric to be secured directly to the frame. With the added RAUSHIELD fabric, the window meets impact ratings for many coastal applications (Wind Zone 3) in new and replacement windows.

There are several storm protection offerings in the market. Why RAUSHIELD?

Most, if not all storm protection systems on the market today require anchors installed on the house or externally mounted to a window or door frame. In many cases, this requires additional time, labor, unsightly external anchors and coordination for installation after the window is installed. RAUSHIELD is unique in that once the window is installed, there is no additional work needed to install anchors as they are integrated within the frame. The window is sold with a pre-cut RAUSHIELD storm protection fabric ready for the building owner to install when the next storm is on the way.

Is the system UV resistant?

The RAUSHIELD “fabric” is a UV-enhanced polypropylene material. Although it has UV-resistant properties, it is not recommended to leave the RAUSHIELD storm protection installed for more than 30 consecutive days.

What is the weight of the fabric and what tools are required to install it?

The fabric weighs 0.18 lbs/sq ft. For a standard 36” x 60” window, the fabric would weighs 2.7 lbs. Another important factor with RAUSHIELD is the simplicity of installation as one person can easily install the fabric. RAUSHIELD is supplied with approved anchors and a Vega T-25W drive bit. The bit is also readily available at home improvement stores.

Can I install the hurricane fabric panels myself?

Yes, RAUSHIELD storm protection (hurricane) fabric is very simple to install, and it is a one-person job. All you need is a drill. RAUSHIELD is supplied with approved anchors and Vega T-25W drive bit. The bit is also readily available at home improvement stores. Watch video

How should the fabric be stored when not in use?

The RAUSHIELD fabric is supplied in a polybag and can be rolled up and stored in that same bag. Alternatively, it can be rolled up and stored in boxes or if preferred it can be stored laying flat in a closed box or bag.

If a projectile hits the RAUSHIELD storm protection fabric, will the window break?

This question comes up often and the truth is that a projectile hitting any rigid hurricane panels at hurricane wind speeds can penetrate the plywood, metal or fiberglass and cause serious damage to your windows. When a projectile hits a RAUSHIELD fabric panel, the panel will flex and the glass behind it may crack or break. The fabric, however, is not damaged and will continue to protect the home from wind intrusion and limit rain penetration, which typically cause much more damage than the broken glass.

Does RAUSHIELD meet impact building codes and insurance standards?

RAUSHIELD has been designed and manufactured to comply with requirements of the Florida Building Code and tested per ASTM E330-14, ASTM E1886-05 & ASTM E1996-05/09 for approval in Wind Zone 3.

The product is impact tested and will comply with wind mitigation requirements for insurance purposes. It is always recommended to verify this with your local jurisdiction and insurance companies. In most cases, they will require a letter from the window manufacturer confirming installation of an impact product.
