University of Chicago named 2017 PPI project of the year

REHAU has received the Building and Construction Division Project of the Year award from Plastics Pipe Institute for its involvement in the recently completed University of Chicago residence and dining hall project.

The award was presented in Palm Beach, Fla. on May 23. Many aspects were considered to be selected to win project of the year: overall perceived market impact of the project, quality of project installation, application and public interest of the project and demonstration of plastic pipe as a superior product for the application.

Within the University of Chicago residence hall and dining commons, more than 300,000 feet of REHAU PEX pipe was used for the hydronic radiant heating and cooling system. Sensors adjust the radiant ceiling slab temperature dynamically depending on the outside temperature, the solar radiation and the orientation of the zone, so students don’t have to use thermostats.

This project is also being considered for the US Green Building Council LEED® certification. Compared to average residence halls in Chicago, the project is designed to achieve a 41% reduction in energy usage, eliminating 1,920 metric tons of CO2 emissions a year.
