RAUVISIO terra™ Craft Elm creates a modern kitchen oasis in the Las Vegas desert.

09.10.2024

Summerlin, an older yet vibrant community in Las Vegas, is known for its unique charm, lush landscape and homes that exude individual flair. Unlike the typical cookie-cutter developments surrounding the city, Summerlin boasts a variety of architectural designs from desert modern to English Tudor, all shaded by grand, mature trees. This standout community provided the idyllic backdrop for a home remodel that aimed to break away from the dated Tuscan-inspired design trend that once dominated the Las Vegas suburbs.

The homeowners, who previously owned a larger property, sought to downsize without compromising on style or utility. After purchasing their 6,858-sq-ft (637-sq-m) home in the Summerlin community, they initially planned on a light remodel. However, they grew inspired to undertake a comprehensive overhaul. Originally built in 1997, the home needed both aesthetic and functional updates.

To realize their ambitious vision, the homeowners enlisted the expertise of designer Michelle DiMauro, who owns Olive Miner Interiors. The homeowners had collaborated with DiMauro on three other design projects over the years, trusting the designer with their minimalist yet functional vision. “The clients have a great vision, especially architecturally,” said DiMauro. “They have a good idea of how to best use spaces and love to take risks, doing things no one else does in home design.”

A key part of their vision was a modern kitchen that maximized the available space. To execute this vision, DiMauro called on long-time cabinetry partner Dave Peterson, owner of PCW Custom Cabinetry and Design. Together, they ensured every inch of the space was optimized. The kitchen design features two islands, floating shelves and plenty of upper and lower cabinetry that are seamlessly integrated with REHAU RAUVISIO terra Craft Elm. This soft, textured HPL laminate surface harmonizes with the home’s minimalist aesthetic, while offering unparalleled durability.

“When we showed Dave the concept, he said he had the perfect surface for the cabinetry,” said DiMauro. “The quality, color and aesthetic appeal of RAUVISIO terra drew the homeowners in. The shade Craft Elm is very modern and sleek, but has a softness to it. The dimension of the surface also gives it some visually interesting depth. All of these qualities are typically hard to find in a cabinetry surface.”

The neutral shade, softness and warmth of Craft Elm makes RAUVISIO terra the perfect foundation of the culinary haven, elevating other textures and eye-catching materials featured within the space. This interplay of contrasting materials includes a unique marble backsplash in Calacatta Viola from Marble Express, powder-coated hardware and matte black accents used for the faucets. Simple white countertops contribute to the minimalist feel of the space, creating balance when paired with the kitchen’s bold accents.

Not only does RAUVISIO terra deliver a modern allure that complements other materials in the space; the surface was pivotal in building a kitchen capable of withstanding the demands of avid cooks.

“The homeowners’ passion for cooking demanded a well-equipped kitchen,” said Peterson. “RAUVISIO terra is a high-quality product with its nice texture, good coloring and durability. It has a good weight to it – not too heavy but not light and flimsy.”

Peterson further incorporated a 6-ft-long Galley sink with several add-on components, Gaggenau appliances equipped with four different units, multiple dishwashers and a walk-in cooler and pantry where RAUVISIO terra Craft Elm was repeated.

“What makes this kitchen unique is that there are a lot of different elements built into the cabinets, including the dishwashers, appliances and trashcans,” explained Peterson. “The pantry shelves also feature a chunkier look than normally requested, which lends something different to the space as many of my clients prefer thinner shelves.”

RAUVISIO terra is an excellent choice for those wanting to incorporate wood trends in their kitchen without the drawbacks of real wood. This deeply textured surface delivers all-round durability, lending an authentic wood look and feel. Compared to TFL and melamine, RAUVISIO terra provides superior impact- and chip-resistance, and it is even more durable than real wood.

“Rift white oak is a popular choice right now, however it is difficult to get consistency in grain color and texture with actual wood,” Peterson explained. “Since RAUVISIO terra is a HPL product, it is easy to get consistency. Terra is also a bit more modern than rift oak. This coloring works well with the light wooden flooring chosen for the space.”

Balancing functionality with modern minimalism, the kitchen remodel is a true reflection of the homeowners’ stunning design vision. “It’s pretty and unique,” remarked DiMauro. “The homeowners are obsessed with it; it’s exactly what they wanted.”
