The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1, with early projections near the historical average of 11 to 15 named storms. With just two months remaining for building owners to secure their properties against devasting storms, they can look to the most versatile impact-rated uPVC window and door line on the market offered by REHAU for solutions that suit virtually any building.
The company’s selection of single-hungs, casements, fixed windows and tilt-turn windows and doors is impact-rated, either tested to meet High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) Florida Building Code standards or approved for Wind Zone 3. The innovative REHAU Exelis™ 190 hung-slider design with integrated RAUSHIELDTM storm protection system allows this line to cover the gamut from builder-grade through high-end replacement options for residential and commercial properties.

“We are committed to addressing the growing need for windows and doors that protect against storm damage,” said Justin Taylor, product development engineer for the window solutions division of REHAU. “While all of our systems are robust enough to be equipped with impact glass, the cost of this traditional approach caused us to look for a better solution, which we now offer as the RAUSHIELD storm protection system on our side-load single hung.”
REHAU Exelis™ 190 hung-slider with RAUSHIELD features a 3 1/4 in (83 mm) frame with patented integral anchor points allowing for quick, easy installation of storm protection fabric in front of standard double-pane glass to achieve its impact rating.
“Compared to using impact glass, this innovative technology reduces production lead time by at least two weeks and reduces the cost of supplying impact-compliant windows by at least 35%,” explains Taylor.
REHAU Exelis™ 190 hung-slider with RAUSHIELD is tested to ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996 and the REHAU Exelis™ 190 side-load hung-slider (standard 2 11/16 in [68.6 mm] frame) is tested to ASTM E1886 and E1996. Both systems are approved for Wind Zone 3.
Rounding out the company’s uPVC impact line are the REHAU Iconic™ 700 single-hung, the REHAU Aspekt™ 1800 outswing casement, the REHAU EuroDesign™ 4500 tilt-turn window and door designs, and the REHAU PerspektiveTM 2200 sliding door. These systems are specifically tested to meet: Miami-Dade protocols TAS 201, TAS 202 and TAS 203; ASTM E1886 and E1996; and Florida Building Code requirements for High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ). In addition, the REHAU System 2150 sliding patio door is designed to meet impact requirements.
The entire line is engineered for high performance with features such as fusion-welded frame and sash corners, interior glazing, dry glazing and compression-seal technology, depending on the design. All systems meet or exceed American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) structural, air and water standards.
"For window manufacturers and builders looking to expand into the impact market, we have a lot to offer,” said Taylor. “Our uPVC systems not only provide the energy-efficiency and durability that have made vinyl the leading residential window material, but are also German engineered with category-leading performance, with structural ratings as high as DP 65.”
